Default ecommerce and sales taxes

I am investigating ecommerce to sell a product directly from my website. How do you automatically factor in sales tax for different US states? I've noticed that when I buy online, sales tax is sometimes only added when buying from within the state of origin. Where do I go to find out regulations? How do others deal with this?

Thanks,
Craig
