I have not used MYSql and event not much used Access.I use SQL Server.
But looking at the popularity MYSql leads Access. As far as the Web database is concerned, MYSql is proving itself better than Access in popularity and performance.

You should use MySQL. Me not knowing database design cuts me off from a big part of the market. I need someone to take me on, so that I can get a new comp and learn it.

MySQL is definatly superior to Access in many ways but they do both have their place. MySQL isnt really good for running a local database on one or two computer to much setup needed. Where as Access is great for a desktop database for one or two users. But Access sucks as a web database, it is slow when many users are connected and quickly gets burdened with to much data being put in(though it can cope with a lot mySQL can take more.

The other benifit of MySQL is that it is free. I would suggest, Will that when you get your new PC maybe you should use the old one as a computer for learning linux, then you can set it up as a local web server for testing applications that you build, for the web.

On another note, you dont have to be cutting yourself out of the market by not knowing mySQL, you could still make decent money by taking packages that are already available and customising the front end to the users needs. In most all case a design doesnt have any need to touch the databse or structure at all.

Yes, but there are more and more people looking for logins and customized e-commerce solutions nowadays, so you are cutting yourself off from the market a lot. Like, a product database, search features, all can be done with minor MySQL coding and in a matter of days.

Take a look at osCommerce http://www.oscommerce.com/. This is a very powerful and customisable online store, i am planning to use it for a couple of different projects that i am going to undertake. Also if you do manage to get reseller hosting make sure that you get one which provides Fantastico or Scripta, i beleive it is included in this package which can be installed into a hosting account in a couple of minutes.
