Default favicon.ico help needed

I'm having problems with my favicon.ico and I hope there is a webmaster or two here that can help.

I'm using FrontPage 2003. I'm viewing my sites using IE7.

Problem: Depending on what I type in the URL bar, sometimes the favicon shows, sometimes it doesn't.

Examples:
http://distinctivedoorsandwoodwork.com the icon appears, but
http://www.distinctivedoorsandwoodwork.com the icon doesn't appear.

However,
http://www.distinctivewooddoors.com the icon appears, but
http://distinctivewooddoors.com the icon doesn't appear, the exact opposite from the situation above.

The index page is the exact same page (copy and paste) and the favicon is the same file as well.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

If IE 7 is like IE 6, the Favicon is buggy. Corey wrote something about favicons that might be helpful. But I just remember that IE 6 had problems with displaying the icon - I think you have to have it in your Favorites for it to work but then if you clear your cache it deletes it.

I think IE7 is supposed to allow the favicon to show whether it's in the favorites or not, like other browsers do now. I don't have any of my sites (or others I visit) in 'My Favorites' and the icons show all the time. It's just weird that one site you have to put in the www in front to make it appear, and another you don't.

Thanks thetopguy for that link

Chimpie I did notice something in your code, you have
Code:
<html>

<head>
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" >
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-us">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<title>Distinctive Doors &amp; Woodwork</title>
<meta name="description" content="Custom interior and exterior doors and related woodwork. Specializing in Old World Finishes.">
</head>
<meta name = "keywords" content ="door, doors, old world, wood doors, cabinetry, old world doors, custom doors, custom cabinetry, old world tradition, old world finish, baseboards, crown moulding, crown molding, european, tudor, tuscan, tuscany, colonial, new european, french, glass panels, southwestern, rustic, spanish colonial, English, renaissance doors, renaissance period, gothic, cathedral">
<body bgcolor="#FFFFCC" link="#000000" vlink="#000000" alink="#000000">
The meta tags should be in the <head>. IE 7 is supposed be be better than IE 6 but I have not looked into too much. The guys and gals over at International Web Developers Network might be able to shed a little light as well.

I would suggest though using a DOCTYPE. Since you are not closing the tags, use
Code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
   "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
And maybe try this on the favicon
Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico">
This is using a virtual link and pushes it back to the root. Or possibly
Code:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" >
to see if one of those helps.

Make sure you do a hard refresh everytime you check to make sure you get the new code.

I've tried both codes for the favicon and the same problem exists.

I have moved the meta tag w/in the <head>, thanks.

Regarding the closing tags, I'm using FP2003 for all of my editing so I would think that it would close them all, but I guess not.

I joined the IWDN forum to see if they have any insight. It's truly frustrating.

No Frontpage 2003 does not - however, the new program that is coming out Expressions does and it supports the DOCTYPEs.

Explain to me what DOCTYPEs are. I'm still a complete newb when it comes to web page design (as you can tell).

If you do not use a DOCTYPE, IE 6 will go into quirksmode and have some problems. For example, on our of our sites, I had
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
on the first page causing one of the drop down menus to lock up - and only one.

When IE is in Quirksmode, you never know what you might get

The favicon is showing up with all your links. Sometimes when you visit a site in IE then add a favicon it doesn't show up. That said... everthing appears to be working in IE7.
