Dell doesn't keep inventory on hand. Their "we don't build it until you order it" gimmick is actually favorable to them, not you. Dell gets your money to buy parts, and it doesn't need a warehouse to store parts or have the risk of parts becoming obsolete waiting for a customer. By using computer tracking, they only place a bulk order (and corresponding low price) when enough customers ask for a specific part. Conveniently enough, a lot of manufacturers are located close by. That's about as efficient as you're going to get. So to compete directly on price would be difficult.
