Default Several unique business images under one name

Hi Everyone,

I'm wondering how I should structure my business so that I can have several "niche" divisions under one big umbrella?

I'm still in the thinking stage of my new business, and the piece of machinery I will be buying can manufacture many different things, each appealing to a very different customer base. For example, if the machine was a table saw, I could make birdhouses and sell them under the name Superior Bird Houses, liquor cabinets and sell them under the name Old World Liquor Cabinets, etc..

Is it possible to do this without much red-tape? for example state tax purposes. Here in NY when I have to file quarterly sales taxes would I have to file for each "branch" or could the main company report as it typically would?

Thanks for any input

Arthur

I do the same thing but it might not work for you as I offer services. But maybe it'll give you an idea.

My main services are graphic design. By I also do other things such as hosting. It's on a website called ccreseller.com but on the website i just add "A service by Client Centers". So it's a sub-service, but under a different name or 'product' name.

Just as long as you file all income/expenses under the same name, you should be fine. However, if you do all your book keeping under "Superior Bird Houses" for the bird houses, then the government will see it as a seperate entitiy.

Arthur: Treat the whole thing as one business. If you make and sell widgets, create a brand i.e. American Widgets from the House of Arthur. If you also make liquor cabinets, create a brand, i.e. Beno Liquor Cabinets from the House of Arthur. Or create a bird house brand, i.e. big bird bird houses from the House of Arthur.

Hope this helps.
