I am about to register a corporation and was curious does it matter how many shares of stock you start off with? What's an average number?
Can't seem to find any information on it.. Thanks. |

A corporation is usually setup through your secretary of state office which has laws governing the initial number of shares authorized for a new corporation in their state. Your incorporation application papers usually show the number. If you want more than the initial authorization you simply request more and pay a fee to the state. Careful, if you fill out the papers asking for less than the max initial number you will usually get what you ask for. As an example, the last I knew my state has an initial authorization of 30,000 shares at no additional cost other than the fee to incorporate.

Many state websites have that information, be sure to take a look. Otherwise I'd call the Secretary of States office. Rhode Island's maximum is 75,000,000.
