Default How to keep the design rights yours

Hi All -
I have a question I'm hoping you can help with. A business partner and I developed a thought for an improved product regarding biking. He had a friend who is starting a machine shop and discussed a prototype to be made. We called out a new innovative material to be used as well as using similar dimensions as OEM. The machine shop helped a little with the dimensions and created us a prototype.

I'm about to have them quote an official production run and will have them sign an NDA as well since we'll be going public. I was curious how else to make sure we own the design rights to the product. What do you typically do in this case? Have a separate contract specifically for design rights? This machine shop that we went with is looking to start up as their own company (currently he does it as hobby) and is a friend of my business partner. I'm not concerned about there being an issue, but just wanted to know what medium is required for the design rights to be ours.

Thanks much for your help.

I believe you are in need of a patent attorney.
