Default Spaming = poor results.

So the last month I've been buying e-mail addresses and following all the rule of e-mail advertising. I've decided that it's really not worth any respectable companies time.

So far we've only got a handful of sign-ups from our spamming but worse is we've made several people upset. So even though it kind of works the long term results look to be a negative outlook on your company, even if you play by the rule.

Anyone have any good suggestions for other "cheap" forms of advertising on the web?

Write articles for topic related news sites, and also offer them to topic related sites as free content.

Provide a lot of content on your site about your subject, with appropriate keyphrases, as search engine food. More content = Better SE placements = more traffic.

Do a press release for your company and/or products.

Join forums that relate to your topic or consist of your target market, post useful tips, help people out, and brand yourself for your company using your signature file at the end of your posts, or in your profile.

Cool Good start!

Well, in my opinion, a few sign ups are better than nothing! I can understand folks getting bothered, just make sure there is a way for them to opt out of the mailings and that this actually works. What is your company? what do you do? Give me this information and I might be able to help you out a bit more. I look forward to a response.

It's a website for people to post work/creative projects on. Then our freelancers (35 to date) bid for the posted project. Then the client goes through the bids reviews portfoio extra and picks the freelancers they like the most.

Unless your sending ads to previous customers, direct marketing generally has a low respose rate. I think the best way to aproach direct marketing is to create your own company mailing list and offer incentives through it to subscribers.

I've found that search engines have been the best way to gain new members on my site.

Targeted marketing is always best - if you can acheive that. If you can establish a successful site then ensure you find a way to get visitor e-mail addresses if you can - a newsletter, for example.

Spam email isn't that bad. In fact, I just found out the someone has some money for me in Nigeria... all I need to do is send them a cashiers check first. Also, the nudie pictures that the send me everyday are entertaining.
