HA HA vangogh.. this was a quite a few years back when I fell into that .. but i think it stemmed from what most new small business owners go through... lack of knowledge combined with some naiveness.... but over the years, you grow out of it and hopefully learn the proper techniques. Personally I wish schools did a better job of preparing people about what's out there. Isn't that why we spend so much to earn these degrees? How many business start and fail because the owners didn't know the best way to market themselves?

I don't think you were the only one who fell into it Jen. There's alot of misinformation online about what works and it's easy to follow the wrong advice. I've followed plenty of bad advice in my day too.

I think the hard part with teaching some of this stuff in schools is that it changes so fast. If we're talking search engines and SEO/M then what's true when the semester starts may not be true by the time the semester ends. Things will certainly be different between the time someone takes the classs and the time they try to put what they learned into practice.

I've taken many classes on some technology that was really out of date as we were being taught about it, but school curriculums can be very slow to change sometimes.

I think the basic principles of onlne marketing can be taught in a classroom, but the tactics....?

that's definitely true.... things change very very quickly. I've always thought someone should compile all the bad advice they've taken (in their business) and write a warning book for new start - ups. I'm sure the stories we all could tell would be more than enough to fill a few

Spam and the bad advice some marketers ooze out to their recruits causes problems most people never even think about. It is not only annoying to have Spam in your mailbox, think about all the bandwidth being sucked up by millions of Spammers sending thousands of junk emails each. Next time you notice your Internet connection being slower than you know it should be, remember to curse the Spammers. It may be free for them to send their sludge, but servers (Internet backbone computers) all over the world have to pick up the tab.

Steve,

I never thought of it that way. I've always despised the spammers, but now I dislike them even more.

That's also a good reason to support stiff penalties for convicted Spammers. I guess my opinion of these bottom feeders is very clear.

wow, i never even thought about the bandwidth... amazing. it's too bad they can't figure out ways to enforce the law a little more online... i don't know that could be both good and bad i suppose.

That's true Steve. Even more than the bandwidth is the time we spend having to delete all the messages. I forget the numbers, but a lot of money is lost due to the time spent clearing out inboxes.

I understand why people send spam. I'm talking about the generally honest people who are sending out spam because they think it's what they're supposed to do to market themselves and not the all out spammers who are very much aware the problems caused by their actions.

And I may understand it, but I still hate it. I've already deleted about 50 spam emails today and will probably go through another 50 before the day is over.

You know, I saw some numbers on that a while back too it was rediculous.. i wish I could remember where I saw that article. But it was an outrageous number.... I guess major corporations could save a TON of money on man hours if they could do away with all that spam.
